Hand sanitiser has become one of the most in-demand products following the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Whether it’s a massive pump bottle at entrances to buildings or a little pocket-sized one, the liquid inside is very highly sought after.

That’s why Bundaberg Rum is lending a hand to ensure there’s no shortage during the outbreak of Covid-19.

The distillery will be pumping out pure ethanol, one of the key ingredients in hand sanitiser, to give over to manufacturers who can bottle it up for use around Australia.

They’re aiming to donate 100,000 litres of ethanol, which will go on to make 500,000 bottles of hand sanitiser.

But the distillery won’t be alone in the effort.

Beenleigh Rum, which is Australia’s oldest distillery, will also crack out as much ethanol as possible to assist with the mammoth task.

Beenleigh distillery owner Angelo Kotses said the company is proud to lend a hand during a difficult crisis.

“We were more than happy to help by providing hand sanitiser for essential needs throughout the state,” he said.

Queensland’s Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Cameron Dick said offers from some of Australia’s most well known distilleries is amazing.

“My Department has reached out to manufacturers around the state, and the response, particularly from two of the most-loved brands in the state, shows just how much local companies are willing to do to help Queenslanders,” Mr Dick said.

“Beenleigh Rum – Australia’s oldest distillery – will commence the production of hand sanitiser this week and have commenced arrangements to supply the Queensland Government to ensure we have a ready supply for schools and frontline workers.

“Bundaberg Rum will donate 100 000 litres of ethanol – enough to produce around 500 000 bottles – to the Queensland Government, and the Department of State Development is already working to identify manufacturers around the state who can quickly transition to the production of hand sanitiser.”

Distillers around the world have been moving in this direction so that their countries don’t undergo a shortage when we need the liquid the most.
