Steam Continues To Break Its Own Player Records With Staggering Numbers
Steam is continuing to break records – last weekend saw over 22.6 million users logged into Valve’s platform, which is 2.6 million more than the record that was set last weekend.
It’s probably safe to say that this trend will continue with the current social situation caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Even those that aren’t self-isolating are still staying at home more, avoiding unnecessary trips to cut down on the risk of spreading the virus. And now that pubs have been ordered to close their doors, it really isn’t any surprise that people are finding a different form of escape in games.

The latest figures can be seen in the graph above, which shows the figures from the seven days up to March 23. You can see concurrent users are increasing more and more each day, peaking on Sunday (March 22). Of course, not all of those users are in-game – some are probably browsing the store or looking on with increasing horror at their pile of shame.
The most-played games hasn’t really changed since we reported the last record number of users, just a week ago. , , and are still sitting in the top three with cosying up just behind them at number four.

Valve isn’t the only company to see an increase in users. Microsoft has also seen a spike in Xbox users.
“It’s heartening to hear from so many people using gaming as a way to stay connected during these times,” said Xbox head, Phil Spencer, in a tweet. “Play is a fundamental human need. Proud to be part of an industry that can offer escape and fun right now. Stay safe.”
Presumably, PlayStation is also seeming a similar increase, though Sony hasn’t mentioned anything specifically.
As more and more people are staying at home because of recent events, game companies have been coming up with ways of enticing players to spend their time playing their games. As we reported earlier, Blizzard has introduced a 100% experience increase buff to which also covers the Starter Edition, so if you’ve been thinking of diving back into Azeroth, now is a great time to do so.
With out now, too, we can only expect to see the number of Steam users continue to increase and its own records continuing to be broken.
