Aldi is giving workers a 10 percent bonus as a way of offering thanks for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Obviously, we’ve all seen what has been happening in supermarkets, and probably heard tales about the conditions that employees have been working in, so it’s hard to argue against them picking up a bit of a bonus after such a massive effort.

Aldi said it want to recognise its staff who have been ‘working tirelessly throughout this extremely busy time’.

The company says the extra money being awarded will be backdated to 9 March 2020. The amount that employees will receive will be based on contracted hours worked, as well as any extra hours that the members of staff have picked up.

The bonus will cover both shop staff and those who work in the company’s distribution operations.

The German supermarket isn’t the only business looking to thank staff for the efforts made during the crisis. Tesco is also offering staff a similar 10 percent bonus for their ‘incredible effort’ working to keep stores open and stocked during these testing times.

All supermarkets in the UK have been under a considerable amount of pressure in recent weeks as shoppers have rushed in droves to stock up on household goods such as toilet roll, bread, pasta and cleaning products.

Aldi workers received a boost to their wages earlier in the year as the company unveiled a large number of pay increases from 1 February.

The company has committed to paying employees more than the Living Wage Foundation’s ‘Real Living Wage’ of £9.30 per hour for those outside London, and £10.75 per hour for workers in the capital.

Like many other supermarkets, Aldi has been forced to restrict the amount of certain products, such as those listed above, so that customers can buy at any one time.

On top of that, the chain has announced that stores will open between 9.30am and 10am on Sundays (8.30-9am in Scotland) solely for emergency workers such as NHS, Police and Fire Service staff.

Emergency workers must present a valid ID, and will also be given priority at checkouts when the stores open at 10am.

Support is also planned for Aldi’s smaller suppliers. The company has reduced payment terms, allowing for any supplier that turns over less than £1m per year to be paid immediately.
