It’s only been a couple of weeks since Microsoft revealed the full specs of the Xbox Series X, which includes a partnership with processor giant, AMD. But a post on AMD’s website, entitled “AMD Statement on Theft of Graphics IP”, suggests that someone has managed to get hold of the graphics source code for the next-gen console. And, according to TorrentFreak (via IGN), they are holding it to ransom for a cool $100 million.

The report from TorrentFreak states that AMD has filed “at least two DMCA notices against Github repositories”, which included parts of the stolen code. The code in question supposedly relates to AMD’s Navi and Arden GPUs, with “the latter being the processor for the upcoming Xbox Series X”.

The hacker that is allegedly responsible for this breach spoke to the site, claiming that they found the source codes on a hacked computer in November 2019. “The source code was unexpectedly achieved from an unprotected computer/server through some exploits,” the person told TorrentFreak. “I later found out about the files inside it. They weren’t even protected properly or even encrypted with anything, which is just sad.”

The person responsible has apparently valued the stolen code at $100 million, and stated that if they didn’t get a buyer, they would “just leak everything”.

Here’s AMD’s post in full:

“At AMD, data security and the protection of our intellectual property are a priority. In December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products, some of which were recently posted online, but have since been taken down.

“While we are aware the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware of the perpetrator possessing any other AMD IP.

“We are working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation.”

It’s hard to know what impact this will have on the Xbox Series X (if any) but any security breach is going to be a massive concern for a company like AMD.
