A passenger recorded the moment an easyJet cabin crew member made an emotional speech during a volunteer flight in order to bring stranded British holidays makers home from Alicante.

With the coronavirus pandemic causing flights to be cancelled, and with entire airline fleets being grounded, many holidays makers have been stranded abroad not knowing how to get home.

But thanks to a volunteer group of easyJet cabin crew members, Brendan Carr and his fellow passengers could travel safely back home to Gatwick Airport from Alicante aboard one of the final flights on 29 March.

Brendan captured the emotional speech which signalled the final time that the crew would be wearing their uniforms for the foreseeable future.

The unknown staff member said: “We’d just like to thank you for giving us the pleasure of flying you home today. It is a very emotional flight for all us crew who volunteered today.

“Not only just to get you home but because we really do enjoy our jobs and working for easyJet. Today for all of us, is the last time for a while we will be wearing our uniforms.

“I’d just like to say thank you, you have been a great crowd to have onboard today and if I could ask you all to give yourselves, the crew and the flight desk one last clap and cheer.”

Earlier today, easyJet grounded its entire fleet of planes due to the coronavirus and couldn’t give a date for when they will pick back up.

The budget airline had already cancelled most services but was just running rescue flights to bring stranded Brits home.

The company said: “We will continue to work with government bodies to operate additional rescue flights as requested.”

Earlier this afternoon (30 March), Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said the UK government is ‘working around the clock’ to help stranded Brits abroad, having struck a £75 million deal with airlines to help ‘tens of thousands’ get back to the UK.

In today’s government coronavirus briefing, Mr Raab said: “We appreciate that an unprecedented number of UK travellers have been trying to get home.

“Hundreds of thousands have already done so, but many travellers haven’t managed to get home. We appreciate the difficult predicament that they find themselves in.

“I want to assure them that this government, their government, is working around the clock to support, advise and help British travellers get home.”
