An elderly German man has been meeting his Danish girlfriend for a daily drink at their countries’ border during the coronavirus lockdown.

Karsten Tüchsen Hansen, 89, and his 85-year-old girlfriend Inga Rasmussen have been an item for two years, but they’ve been cut off from each other after their native countries went into isolation.

After spending almost every day together for the past year, the lovebirds decided they would meet for a coffee, local spirit or some biscuits on a daily basis and have a chat.

Although they are meeting up, the pair are making sure they’re not kissing and cuddling, and they are maintaining what is thought to be a safe distance between each other.

Speaking to Deutsche Welle, Ms Rasmussen said: “It’s sad, but we can’t change it.”

Mr Hansen and Ms Rasmussen shot to fame locally when the local mayor cycled past them.

He said: “On today’s bike ride I laid the way past Møllehus border. This is where I met these two lovely people.

“She, 85 years old and lives in Gallehus. He, 89 years old and lives in Süderlügum. They’ve gotten to know each other at a late age and usually visit each other every day.

“Now they meet halfway at the blocked border. Let us stand together during this difficult time and find solutions together.”

It seems, elderly people (who are deemed to be at a greater risk of contracting coronavirus) are coming up with creative ideas to see each other more all over the place.

Here in the UK, three women in their 70s decided to move in with each other rather than spend self-isolation alone.

The lifelong mates from the north of England, Doreen, Dotty and Carol, thought it would be more fun if they quarantined themselves together.

Doreen told BBC Breakfast: “We’ll have a week in our own homes in self-isolation and if we’re still fit and well then we would decide which house to go and live in.”

The ladies told presenter Jayne McCubbin that they all had properties with a similar number of rooms, but each place had something else to offer.

Dotty and Jayne had decent back gardens where they could exercise and chill out, whereas Doreen had Netflix and sounded pretty happy at the idea of binge watching with her mates.

The ladies joked that they’ll definitely be getting in a ‘supply’ of wine before they close themselves off from the world.
