Seagull Filmed Eating A Live Rabbit Whole On Remote Welsh Island

Hey, ever wondered if a seagull could swallow a rabbit whole? Well, wonder no more! Check out the video below and all doubts will be dispelled.

It’s worth pointing out that if you are squeamish, a small child, or just don’t like seeing vicious seagulls scoffing down cute animals, maybe sit this one out.

So, the video shows a Great Black-backed Gull enjoying something of a rushed lunch on the remote Skomer Island, which is off the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales.

Using just a few simple gulps, the bird managed to chuck the entire rabbit down. It’s fairly impressive stuff.

It does, however, bring back some painful memories of Gizmo the chihuahua, so cruelly taken from us by a passing seagull last year.

Well, that’s the story we got, anyway. There are still conspiracy theories about how Gizmo eventually met his end.

The wildlife team on Skomer Island actually initially thought that the seagull might have had eyes bigger than it’s stomach, but it quickly becomes clear that the bird would have no trouble clearing it’s proverbial plate.

The wildlife team, which is managed by the Wildlife Trust of West and South Wales, said that this is a pretty common occurrence, and that rabbits are a key part of the diet of the gulls that live on the uninhabited island.

They wrote: “Rabbits are an important part of their diet when none or very few small seabirds or seabird chicks are available.”

The island is home to thousands of puffins, and also plays host to then world’s largest colony of Manx Shearwater.

That’s more than 300,000, in case you’re wondering.

As for people, there are very few.

Of that small group, Nathan Wilkie and Sylwia Zbijewska, who are both 29-years-old and live on the island whilst in season, are currently in an even more isolated form of isolation after Nathan developed a cough whilst on a trip to the mainland.

He said: “I’m sort of showing potential symptoms and it’s difficult to know if it is coronavirus or not.

“In theory, we come in contact with very few people, but because myself and Sylwia share accommodation, we’re both in quarantine basically.”

Sylwia added: “You would imagine that us being isolated for most of the year, that what happens on the mainland doesn’t really affect us, but in this situation it does.”

The island is usually open for day trips between May and mid-July, but it seems like the birds might get a bit more peace this year.

Good news for the birds, bad news for the rabbits.
