A man from Hawaii who went on Facebook Live during a storm and joked about getting hit by lightning got the shock of his life when – yes, you’ve guessed it – he got hit by lightning. You can see the exact moment the lightning crashes down near him in the video below.

The man in question is called Aumauinuuese Puni and he presumably can’t believe how lucky he has been. That’s right, remarkably he is still alive.

Puni was minding his own business during a night shift at the building for which he is – somewhat ironically – a fire warden, when he spotted a huge storm rolling in across Honolulu, Hawaii.

Now, we all like to watch a good electrical storm, right? Well, Puni is no different. He decided to head up to the rooftop of the building, which happens to be 41 storeys high, to grab a better view.

From the 41^st floor of this building it’s possible to see for miles and take in some of the sights of Hawaii’s capital city.

However, during a lightning storm, it’s best off to be as far away from that sort of vantage point as possible. Particularly if you’re carrying some sort of conductive metal object.

Like, for example, an umbrella.

As Puni arrived onto the rooftop when on Facebook Live, he made a throwaway comment about getting electrocuted during the rainstorm.

With remarkable foresight – although we have to assume he was joking – he said: “Umbrella on the rooftop. I’ll probably get struck by lightning.”

Which he promptly did.

If you watch the video, you’ll see a bright flash and notice that the camera goes a bit weird. While it’s not a direct hit – which is good news for Puni – it’s still a little bit too close for comfort.

As mentioned, he survived relatively unhurt. However, he admitted in an interview with KITV4 that it hasn’t actually sunk in yet how close to death he came.

He said: “All of a sudden, I just got dropped.

“I felt my hands just tighten up and my head burning and that was it.”

However, he remains upbeat about the whole thing. He added: “Knock on wood, I’m still kicking, I’m still alive.”

Well, that’s true. Let’s just hope that lightning doesn’t strike twice. Let’s also hope that he stops going out onto high rooftops carrying essentially a lightning rod during an electrical storm.
