'SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated' Release Date Confirmed

In these trying times I feel we could all use a reminder of a simpler, happier time. Fortunately, THQ Nordic is on hand to deliver just that with the remake of the popular 2003 title that delighted kids across the world on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.

The original game was hardly ever GOTY material (it has a respectable 71 on MetaCritic) but that doesn’t matter. We didn’t play as kids because we wanted an earth-shattering experience that completely overhauled everything we thought we knew about video games. We played it because a bright and colourful adventure starring one of our favourite cartoon characters.

We’re excited to return it so we can enjoy some mindless fun that makes us feel young and carefree all over again. At least that’s my take on it. Maybe you really do think it was the best game of 2003, in which case… fair play to you.

Anyway, the good news is we don’t have much longer to wait for the remake. (that name is way too long) is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd. The game was first announced around this time last year, and will feature a fairly decent amount of new content for a remaster based on a licensed product.

We can expect “high-end visuals” and “modern resolutions”, as well as a new multiplayer horde mode that can be played locally or online. There’s even the promise of content that was cut from the original release, including a Robo Squidward boss fight. I, for one, am intrigued.

“Are you ready, kids?”, asks THQ in the game’s synopsis as if it doesn’t already know the answer. “The cult classic is back, faithfully remade in spongetastic splendor! Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr. Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots? Of course you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn’t you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on!

Unsurprisingly, (that name is still too long) will also feature special collector’s edition. The Shiny Edition comes with a SpongeBob figure, some stickers, a copy of the game… and some tennis socks. Sure. Then there’s the F.U.N Edition, with comes with all the same stuff as the Shiny Edition plus figures of Patrick and Sandy, and a set of Tiki keyrings.
