PlayStation Exclusives Will Be More Important Than Ever, Sony Says

Like it or not, it seems the concept of console exclusive games will carry over into the next generation of consoles… At least as far as Sony is concerned.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Sony executive vice-president Simon Rutter said that exclusives are “hugely important. More important, I think, than they’ve ever been.” Rutter also suggested that exclusives are key to developers getting the most they can out of a console.
“Through their proximity to the system’s designers, PlayStation’s studios are able to really extract the most out of the system performance and that’s a really valuable attribute for a platform holder to have,” he explained. “[PlayStation] can rely on a studio network that can really show off the innovations that we’re trying to put across… when the exclusives are as powerful as or , they are important games that people want to play.”
Much of the PlayStation 4’s success was down to its commitment to quality exclusives titles, of course. and were all critical and commercial darlings. Meanwhile, already looks set to smash records, and it’s not even out yet. So maybe it’s not a huge surprise to discover the company wants to keep that gravy train rolling.
Last week’s PlayStation 5 reveal event cemented Sony’s dedication to exclusives going forward. We saw a number of sequels to successful PlayStation 4 titles, including , and .
Clearly that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We already know is a spinoff that will bridge the gap between and a “full” sequel, meaning more Spidey action is on the way. We can also assume that Sony’s Santa Monica Studio is working on a follow-up to , and of course Naughty Dog will have something for us eventually, now that work has finished on .
Personally, I’d love Sony and FromSoftware to team up again and give us a sequel to . I know we’re getting a remake, and that’s awesome, but there’s something about the PS4 exclusive Gothic horror that I just can’t get enough of. The good news is that the PS5 isn’t even out yet and there are so many exclusives to be excited about. I can wait for ‘s turn.
