There have been fairly persistent rumours over the last year or so that Activision is planning to release a remastered version of 2009’s beloved this year. The game first appeared on a ratings board last year, and was then mentioned by two different leakers in the last few months who claim intimate knowledge of goings-on over at Activision.

More recently, was spotted on a separate ratings board, making a 2020 remaster look that much more likely. The catch? According to everything we’ve seen and heard regarding the remaster so far, it looks like what we’re getting is a fresh lick of paint on the game’s memorable single-player campaign, with no multiplayer to speak of.

It would be an odd move to omit multiplayer for two main reasons. The first is that 2016’s featured multiplayer. The second is that many consider the multiplayer in to be some of the best in the franchise – why not bring it back if you’re going to bring back the campaign?

According to one leaker, Activision bring back a lot of multiplayer… just not in the way we might have expected. Okami13 has a fairly reliable track record. They previously leaked news of 2019’s Gunfight alpha before it was announced, as well as the March 10th launch date for .

They recently suggested a remaster will launch this year with multiplayer… but they’re now hearing differently. Okami13 took to Twitter to claim that Activision and Infinity Ward will be bringing the majority of multiplayer maps to 2019’s rebooted to avoid splitting the community.

“To be clear.. it won’t be a direct remaster of the multiplayer,” Okami13 wrote last night. “Instead they’re taking the maps and adding them to MW 2019 so as to not split the community again. Just heard this within the last week and I’m letting you guys know now.”

I should also point out that Okami13’s Twitter account appears to have been deleted at the time of writing. That could very well mean anything of course… but the timing is certainly suspicious. While you should obviously take these rumours with a pinch of salt until we hear something official, not splitting the community is something Infinity Ward been committed to with the most recent Call Of Duty.

The studio has released all new content for free on all platforms at the same time, and supported cross-platform play. It’s not a stretch to imagine that if ‘s campaign is getting a remaster, the maps would be added to 2019’s especially since maps like Rust and Shipment already exist within the reboot. This could also imply the campaign will be added as single-player DLC to the 2019 game, rather than released as a standalone experience.

Activision and Infinity Ward have already revived a number of fan-favourite maps as part of ‘s first two seasons of content. Given the game’s ongoing popularity and news that further seasons planned, it’s all but certain that more old maps will be returning. But the more content Infinity Ward wants to toss our way the better, as far as I’m concerned.
