BioWare Teases New Game From 'One Of Its Most Prestigious' Franchises

BioWare has posted a new job listing that suggests the studio has started work on a new game that’ll revive one of its “most prestigious franchises.” As spotted by SegmentNext, EA posted the job listing earlier this month, calling for a technical director to serve as a senior engineering lead on the next major entry in a classic BioWare franchise.

The job post also specifies that the successful candidate will be someone who has experience in “developing, debugging and optimizing AAA multiplayer games on PC or console”. So, exactly what franchise is BioWare talking about?

It’s unlikely to be a sequel to for… obvious reasons. We can also probably rule out this job listing being in reference to the upcoming , because EA has already confirmed that game is in development. It wouldn’t make sense for a job listing not to specifically mention the game by name if we all know about it, surely?

That really only leaves one serious contender: Mass Effect. There have been various rumblings over the past few months to suggest that BioWare Edmonton has started work on a new entry in the much-loved sci-fi RPG franchise with Mike Gamble, who worked on the beloved original trilogy as well as the… less beloved .

In fact, as you can see from Gamble’s Twitter bio, the man himself confirms he’s the project director for an unannounced BioWare title. That, coupled with the fact that numerous members of staff at BioWare have said repeatedly over the last few years that Mass Effect is far from being over, would suggest that this unannounced game really can’t be anything else.

BioWare Executive Eroducer Mike Darrah told Polygon in an interview a while back that they’re “definitely not done” with Mass Effect. “There’s a lot of stories to be told”, he explained to the site. “We could pull on the threads we put down with ; we could pull on threads from . There’s a lot of interesting space to be explored.”

Late last year, BioWare General Manager and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson also took to Twitter to share some concept art of the original trilogy. While getting all dewy-eyed and nostalgic, he also hinted that BioWare still has plenty of ideas and stories left to tell.

We can at least assume that this new Mass Effect, that is what the unannounced project is, will be a next-gen title. But that’s pretty much all we can assume right now. Whether this new game ends up as a sequel to the divisive , a follow-up to the original trilogy, or the start of a brand-new saga remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though – it’ll be great to have Mass Effect back.
