Police Fine Man For Attempting To Drive 120 Miles To 'Buy Bread'

Police have fined a man after he was caught doing 110mph on the motorway to ‘buy bread’.

The man was stopped last night (Sunday 5 April) travelling from Nottingham northbound on the M1.

When asked why he was travelling the man, who was in the car with his two young kids, told officers he was heading to London to pick up bread as it was £1 cheaper.

Yep, that’s right, the man seemingly thought travelling more than 120 miles, during a lockdown, to save a quid on bread was a valuable use of time.

According to Leicestershire Police, the man was whacked with two fixed penalty notices and reported to court for the speeding.

Police said one notice was speeding, with the amount of the fine to be decided at court, and the other was a £60 fine issued under the recently announced Health Protection Regulations 2020, brought in during the coronavirus lockdown.

Last week, police in Nottingham carried out a stop and search on a man carrying a green rucksack. Body cam footage shows a cop looking in the backpack and finding a large amount of cannabis.cannabis.

After the discovery, he told police: “I’m buying in bulk because you can’t get out because of the lockdown.”

Inspector James Walker, who leads a special Covid-19 task force made up of police constables, specials, community support officers and community protection officers, said it’s like ‘Christmas Day every day’ as most people follow the rules and stay indoors.

He said: “Acquisitive crime has gone down because people are at home, so there is less burglary and less people on the streets to commit robberies. Shops are shut so there are less shop thefts. Therefore, the people who use drugs have got less money to buy them.

“I don’t think it’s stopped but we are not seeing it in its usual guise. How it has changed? It is difficult to say yet but it is still happening.”
