Arnott’s Gingernut Biscuits Have A Different Recipe, Colour, Texture And Taste Across The Country

When you tuck into a packet of biscuits or chips or any food product in Australia, you’d think it would be the same everywhere.

If you went on a road trip to a different state or territory, the food you buy from the big corporations surely would be exactly the same, right?

Well, that might be true for a lot of things but it doesn’t apply to Arnott’s Gingernut Biscuits. Shockingly, they are different in nearly every state and territory in the country.

The Arnott’s website has the ingredients and nutritional information for the product and it clearly shows variations across Australia.

Western Australia and South Australia share the same recipe, however Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales are all different to each other. There’s no information on what happens in Tasmania, the ACT or the Northern Territory.

Arnott’s has admitted it makes different batches to suit the differing tastes of each state.

That’s because different biscuit companies had been making their own Gingernut Biscuit since 1906. However, in the 1960s these companies were absorbed by Arnott’s.

The company’s Nicky Thomson told ABC Radio Canberra’s Lish Fejer: “When we consolidated our baking operations to New South Wales we tried to put the [original Arnott’s] NSW ginger nut out nationally,” Ms Thomson said.

“But we got told by people in different states, who had been enjoying ginger nuts made by different biscuit companies, that they preferred the one they were used to.”

While there are differences in taste and ingredients, Ms Thompson says there are pretty close to each other.

“The ingredients list are actually really similar between the four different varieties; what changes is how long we bake them for and how much of each ingredient goes into different bakes,” she added.

People on social media have confirmed that they definitely taste different depending on where you are.

One person on Reddit wrote: “I actually got relatives and friends of friends to mail all the different varieties to me, the sat down and did a taste test. Can confirm they’re all very different.”

Another added: “I can verify. I have collected Gingernuts from Vic, NSW, ACT and the NT and they are definitely different. NSW/ACT ones are by far the best. Super hard, less sweet and perfect for dipping in tea without falling apart.”

So, if you were looking for mildly interesting information for your day then you’ve got it.
