The Witcher 3 Sold Nearly As Well In 2019 As It Did In 2015

had a pretty damn phenomenal year last year, thanks in part to the huge popularity of the live-action Netflix show. Publisher CD Projekt has just announced the financial results for 2019, and it seems that sales of the open world fantasy RPG came close to matching the game’s sales back in 2015 when it first launched. That’s not to be sniffed at.

While the publisher didn’t go into specifics, it’s clear that was a huge contributor to the company’s revenue in 2019. According to the report, sales of were around 7 million last year compared to 9.5 million in 2015. That’s easily the most successful 12 months the game has had since it first released, and a huge win for a single-player experience that’s been out for four years now.

Unsurprisingly, PC was the most popular platform for in 2019, just as it was in 2018, 2017, and 2016. PC sales accounted for over half of the total copies sold with 53%, while PS4 saw 26%, and Xbox pulled in 10%. The Nintendo Switch version, which released in October 2019, accounted for 11% of sales.

Finally, 82% of all the game’s sales made in 2019 were digital, compared to a mere 29% when the game launched in 2015. A testament to the game’s success on Steam, but also a sign of just how quickly audiences have jumped from physical to digital in a short few years.

PC being the platform of choice for isn’t that surprising, of course. It’s where the game is consistently cheapest, while the Nintendo Switch version launched at full price. Not that I’m complaining, because having on a portable machine is a dream come true. Oh, and the game has been available on Xbox Game Pass since late last year, so I’m not sure who’d be buying it for Xbox One when they just play it via the excellent subscription service.

Towards the end of last year it was reported that there were more gamers playing The Witcher 3 on Steam than there were the day it launched. This was obviously down to the Henry Cavill-fronted live-action adaptation which released in December. I’m assuming the show also played a big role in the game’s overall success on other platforms over the last few months. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; thank you Henry Cavill.

EA’s New ‘Rocket Arena’ Is More Than Another Battle Royale

BY THEREDNOW STAFF Y’know when games get revealed and they don’t really do it for you, at the first time of asking? I definitely got the impression that, after its spot on this year’s EA Play presentation, that has firmly fallen into that category. What was shown off covered some key bases: this is a […]
