Virgin's Velocity Website Crashes As People Panic Buy With Their Remaining Points
With Virgin Australia on the brink of financial collapse, many people wanted to get their money’s worth before the company went into voluntary administration.
A failed meeting with the Australian government last night saw Prime Minister Scott Morrison knock back a request for a $1.4 billion bailout.
At the same time, loads of people logged onto Virgin’s Velocity Points system to see what they could get with their remaining points.
Unfortunately, it seems like, as a result, the website has crashed.
Social media posts show users have been struggling to login over the past few days, however the problem was loud and clear last night.
People wanting to claim their points for a toaster or some wine were still experiencing difficulties logging in this morning.
Many are asking what voluntary administration will mean for their points, with some flyers having saved them for years.
It’s an extremely profitable arm of Virgin Australia, with estimates saying around $2 billion worth of points are circulating at the moment.

Founder and CEO of iFlyFlat Steve Hui said the Velocity system could stick around even if Virgin collapses.
“The Velocity program is a profitable business with over 10 million members and is a very strong loyalty marketing powerhouse,” he told savings.com.au.
“I believe Velocity points will continue to have a life even if Virgin the airline changes, but the value of the points and the redemption options and airline partners might change a little depending on who buys the Velocity business.
Point Hacks Daniel Sciberras also told the website: “It’s very, very, very unlikely people’s points will be worthless in a week’s time.

“The value proposition of these points has not changed because of this outbreak. You’re still going to get the best value for your redemption if you use them on flights and more specifically if you use them on long haul business class flights.
“Now, of course, there’s a lot of uncertainty in that proposition. And so some people might be thinking, well, should I be looking to use them elsewhere?
“If you do use them on non-flight rewards, you are going to get less value for your points.”
He says a good way to get around the issue is to purchase gift cards as it will give you a chance to potentially get the item you want from the store on sale or at a discount. If you’re purchasing it on the Velocity website then you’ll be paying full retail price.
