Bloke Builds Partner Incredible Garden Pub In Honour Of Her Late Parents

BY THEREDNOW STAFF

For the majority of us, the prospect of settling down for a pint in the pub seems like a distant dream. But for Amanda, this dream is a daily reality, thanks to partner David who built her a truly impressive pub of her own in the garden.

David, a self-employed builder, began putting his skills to good use before lockdown took effect with the aim of paying homage to Amanda’s late parents, who used to run a pub in Camden called The Mitre.

Fittingly, the garden pub – in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex – has adopted the same moniker and features a number of tributes to Amanda’s parents.

Speaking to Therednow, 56-year-old David said: “Our garden pub is named The Mitre, with pictures of Amanda’s parents above the bar, in honour of them.

“A few years before work started on the pub I bought Amanda the Mitre sign that we now have hanging outside, and I promised her then that I would build it. Amanda’s reaction when she first saw the sign that I had bought her was tears of joy, very emotional.”

As the pictures demonstrate, David did a fantastic job on the place, both in terms of its construction and the little details, with the conversion costing around £2,000 ($2,467) all in.

Dad-of-two David said: “The materials cost hardly anything, it’s the fit-out where the money has gone.

“The actual bar build took about a week, but the fit-out took a bit longer, sourcing items from eBay and Facebook, plus going to some proper pub suppliers online for the bar stools and brass foot bar.

“We have a full sound system including a projector streaming live sports and hooked up to a karaoke machine. The pub even features a real working bar hatch and door.

“Parts of the bar are made from Amanda’s old wooden sleigh bed, something we joke about all the time. We have always liked the idea of a penny wall, so the main wall is covered in over 22,000 individual pennies stuck by hand by the both of us. The ceiling is covered in over 200 old pub trays and brewery signage, plus beer mats and pub memorabilia.

“The pub is fully stocked with wines, spirits and many beers, but unfortunately the pumps are only for show I’m afraid – although they do light up.”

Clearly, having an exquisitely kitted out pub in your back garden can only ever be a beautiful thing, but the pair are currently more glad to have it than they ever could have imagined.

David said: “This has been an absolute godsend to us during the lockdown. We pop to the pub most evenings for one or two.

“It has a real pub feeling in the evenings when we get the battery candles flicking, the fake flame fire burning and the music playing, all with a nice pint of Guinness.

“It was most certainly worth every penny and we can’t wait to hold a few parties once the threat of the virus has passed.”
