Huge Avalanche Chases Skier Down Mountain

BY THEREDNOW STAFF

Footage caught by the GoPro affixed to Tom Grub’s safety helmet caught the high-speed avalanche getting better and more detailed prior to entirely covering him while he was winter sports off-piste in La Plagne, France on 7 March.

Grub, 38, continued to ski completely unconcerned to the huge avalanche coming up behind him – before it all goes t ** s up, Grub can also be listened to giving out a little ‘woohoo’ as he slides via the snow.

But it doesn’t take long before the avalanche catches up with him and knocks him off his feet, while completely covering him in snow.

At this point, the camera is blocked out by the snow, but you can hear him groan as he knocked over. Fortunately, Grub was able to inflate his airbag, which meant that he was able to stay on the surface as he gets dragged along.

Miraculously, Grub wasn’t seriously hurt in the incident and didn’t make a trip to hospital.

He’s since said he reckons the avalanche was caused by a fellow skier at the top of the mountain, who hadn’t waited for him to finish making his way down – and to make matter worse, they didn’t step in to rescue him later, either.

Speaking to ViralHog, Grub said: “It was a mix between a windstorm that lifted me and a huge ocean wave that shook me all over the place. I was very scared, the reflex of pulling on the handle of my airbag saved my life.

“This avalanche was triggered by a person at the top of the mountain who did not wait for me to finish my off-piste descent and who did not come to my rescue by following. It is an experience that I will never forget.” I’ll bet.

According to the Daily Mail, Grub was only ‘half buried’ in the snow for a few seconds.

He explained: “It lasted 10 seconds. Ten seconds where I couldn’t control anything. I was half buried, stuck like cement but my airbag bag saved me.

“My way of understanding the mountain will evolve with this experience. I have always taken every one of my off-track outings very seriously but I will increase my vigilance now.”
